How You Can Close the Gap for Israel's Children

ProblemSolutionHow You Can HelpGive One Day of Daycare

THE PROBLEM

Most working American parents know that finding high-quality, affordable daycare is crucially important.

In Haifa - Boston's sister city - only one in three Ethiopian-Israeli preschoolers receives early childhood education.

As children of immigrants, they already struggle with language and cultural barriers and suffer from the effects of poverty. The lack of early childhood education compounds these problems.

You can help. You can give these children the head start they need. Just $18 can provide one day of daycare for an Ethiopian-Israeli child.

Haifa has few daycare centers in immigrant neighborhoods and the programs that do exist are often too expensive for Ethiopian-Israeli families, half of whom rely on public assistance.

What's more, few pre-schools have programs or teachers who are familiar with Ethiopian language or culture.

The lack of affordable daycare prevents parents from working outside the home, creating one more obstacle for Ethiopian families who are trying to break the cycle of poverty.

THE RESULT:

  • Ethiopian-Israeli first graders who begin their formal education unprepared to learn - and significantly behind their peers.
  • A new generation will face a future with limited prospects for education and employment.

But now there is a way we can help create a brighter future for them... and all of Israel.

Read about the solution.

How you can help.

"Providing quality early childhood education for ALL our children is crucial for the skills and learning they need to succeed. Thanks to the Jewish community of Boston, our people - and our city - are going to be stronger than ever before."

- Rachel Metuki, Director of Education and Cultural Services, Haifa municipality
